At HydroDroid, our mission is to empower decision-makers with deeper insights into water environments. By delivering high-quality data and actionable intelligence, we enable more informed decisions that contribute to the protection and improvement of aquatic ecosystems.

Ultimately, our purpose is simple: to help leave the planet’s water environments in a better state than we found them.

Our History

Our story began in 2022, during the evaluation of a master’s thesis focused on measuring eelgrass coverage in Danish fjords. At the time, eelgrass restoration relied on divers planting each shoot by hand—an extremely labor-intensive process that limited restoration efforts to small areas. This sparked an idea for HydroDroid’s founder, Lars Henriksen: what if a robotic system could automate the planting process, moving efficiently across the seabed?

Turning that vision into reality required more than just an underwater robot. It called for a reliable surface platform capable of supplying power, enabling communication, and supporting continuous operations. This realization led to the creation of the first HydroDroid vessel—the foundation of what we are today.

In 2023, the first HydroDroid vehicle was launched. The journey from concept to operation brought its share of challenges, from operating within tight energy constraints—relying solely on solar power—to navigating demanding marine conditions. These early experiences shaped our technology and broadened our perspective. Over time, our focus evolved from restoration to monitoring and mapping water environments, both in freshwater and at sea. And while our work has expanded, the original inspiration remains close to our core. Perhaps one day, we will return to eelgrass restoration
